Maurits Sillem was born in London and studied Art History at the University of Edinburgh and Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art, London
He initially worked as a curator of 19th century and contemporary photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum before deciding to concentrate on taking photographing himself.
His first major commission was to document and photograph the 50 collaborators of the FIG-1 project organised by Jay Jopling of White Cube and Mark Francis, now of Gagosian Gallery. This work was published in a Bruce Mau designed book, ‘Fig-1’.
Maurits Sillem’s fashion stories have appeared in All In, Buffalozine, Crash, Dazed and Confused, Muse, Numero Berlin, Numero Homme Berlin, Novembre and Pop.
Amongst the stylists he has collaborated with are Danielle van Camp, Karen Langley, Goetz Offergeld, Georgia Pendlebury, Sarah Richardson, Anna Schiffel, Joanna Schlenska, Andrej Skok and Tallulah Harlech .
His portraits have appeared in Another, Another Man, Dazed and Confused, Numero Homme Berlin, Nylon, Guardian Weekend and include Luc Tuymans, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christian Marclay, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Douglas Gordon, Gavin Turk, Gilbert & George, Tracey Emin, Zandra Rhodes and Patti Smith. His work for music pr includes the bands Kings of Leon and Kasabian.
Commercial collaborations include Adidas, Agnona, Burberry, Chanel, Courreges, Joseph, Nike, Toga
His work is featured in the book “Anti ‘Glossy” Fashion Photography Now, published by Rizzoli, 2019, ed. Patrick Remy
He is currently working on various personal book projects including Campo de’ Fiori in collaboration with ALL IN magazine. Previous art projects include Filter Beds and Requiem Funeral Mass and a book Approximately 30 Burberry Prorsum catwalk shows
